Central Valley Scholars (CVS) is a community-based organization led by first-generation, queer, Students of Color, with a mission of creating accessible pathways towards higher education for historically impacted communities in the Central Valley. CVS strategy focuses on creating critical, conscious, and realistic perspectives on higher education; with an emphasis on how systemic forms of oppression affect undeserved students' academic trajectories. CVS fosters equity by providing workshops, scholarships, mentorship (themtorship), and specialized programming for students to achieve the education they deserve.

About the Role

 

The Director of Operations and Finances (Part-Time/Hybrid) is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of Central Valley Scholars and overseeing all financial aspects of the organization. This role reports directly to the Executive Director and plays a crucial part in ensuring the organization's sustainability and growth. Working approximately 20-25 hours per week, the ideal candidate will be a detail-oriented professional with a strong background in both operations and finance. This position requires a strategic thinker who can translate the organization's mission and goals into effective operational processes and sound financial practices. The Director will be instrumental in developing and implementing systems that support Central Valley Scholars' programmatic work, ensuring efficient resource allocation, and maintaining financial health. Key areas of focus include financial management, operational efficiency, human resources, and strategic planning. The successful candidate will work closely with the Executive Director to drive organizational growth, optimize resource utilization, and enhance the impact of Central Valley Scholars' programs in the community. 

 

As Central Valley Scholars continues to expand its reach and impact, the Director of Operations and Finances will play a pivotal role in scaling the organization's infrastructure and ensuring its long-term sustainability. This position offers an exciting opportunity for a finance and operations professional to make a significant contribution to an organization dedicated to empowering students in the Central Valley through education and mentorship. The ideal candidate will bring not only technical expertise but also a passion for education and community development, aligning with Central Valley Scholars' mission to create pathways to higher education for underserved students in the region. They will be expected to provide clear financial reports, develop and manage budgets, oversee grant compliance, and implement best practices in nonprofit operations. The role demands a balance of analytical skills and interpersonal abilities, as the Director will interact with staff, board members, volunteers, and external stakeholders. 


Key Responsibilities

  1. Oversee daily operations and ensure smooth functioning of all organizational processes, including program delivery, volunteer management, and internal communications

  2. Manage financial operations, including budgeting, accounting, and financial reporting, ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and regulations

  3. Develop and implement operational policies and procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness across the organization

  4. Oversee human resources functions, including hiring, onboarding, training, performance management, and fostering a positive work culture

  5. Manage vendor relationships and contracts, negotiating terms to maximize value for the organization

  6. Assist the Executive Director in strategic planning and organizational development, providing data-driven insights to inform decision-making

  7. Supervise and support the Program Coordinator and Marketing and Design Coordinator, ensuring alignment of their work with organizational goals

  8. Implement and maintain financial controls and risk management procedures

  9. Prepare and present financial reports and analyses to the Executive Director and Board of Directors

  10. Coordinate with external auditors for annual financial audits

  11. Manage grant finances, including tracking expenses, preparing financial reports for funders, and ensuring grant compliance

 
Qualifications

​

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Nonprofit Management, or related field

  • Minimum of 1+ year(s) of experience in operations and financial management, preferably in a nonprofit setting

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to think strategically and implement tactically

  • Excellent organizational and leadership abilities, with experience managing and developing staff

  • Proficiency in financial management software and MS Office Suite

  • Knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, tax laws, and regulatory requirements

  • Experience with grant management and reporting

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present complex financial information to diverse audiences

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment

  • Commitment to the mission and values of Central Valley Scholars


Preferred Qualifications
 

  • CPA certification or advanced degree in Finance or Accounting

  • Experience with nonprofit fundraising and development

  • Familiarity with the Central Valley region and its unique challenges and opportunities
