About Central Valley Scholars:

Central Valley Scholars (CVS) is a community-based organization led by first generation, queer, Students of Color, with a mission of creating accessible pathways towards higher education for historically underserved communities in the Central Valley. CVS’s strategy focuses on creating critical, conscious, and realistic perspectives on higher education, with an emphasis on how systemic forms of oppression affect underserved students' academic trajectories. CVS fosters equity by providing workshops, scholarships, mentorship (themtorship), and specialized programming to help students achieve the education they deserve.

About The Workshop:

The Central Valley Scholars College-Prep Workshops were designed with insight from Central Valley students who identified gaps in resources and learning in their own upbringing, pertaining specifically to navigating education, and further progressed based on feedback and learned experiences from previous workshops.

We believe that there is untapped potential in the Central Valley, specifically with underserved students, in which they have all the potential to succeed; but merely lack the resources to do so. Our College-Prep Workshops provide the support, guidance, and tools for students to achieve the education they deserve; and builds a community of diverse Central Valley students who are loved, encouraged, and believed in during their higher education trajectories.

We want students to be able to critically think about the institutions to which they are applying to, and come out of this workshop with a better understanding of what is needed during this application process, all the while feeling confident and empowered to achieve their academic goals.

This is an all-day workshop starting at 9:00 am and ending at 6:30 pm on Saturday September 24, 2022 for volunteers.

Volunteer Description:

To help us run a smooth and successful event, we are looking for 5 volunteers, or “Prep Scholars” for our workshop on September 24, 2022 at Tranquility High School. We will need volunteers to help us carry out tasks such as; morning registration, setup/clean up, food distribution, preparation and distribution of materials, taking pictures during the event, etc.

In addition to these duties, Prep Scholars will be asked to walk around and provide feedback to students during our college and scholarship writing portion.

Prep Scholars will also be asked to participate in our undergraduate student panel, where we ask our volunteers to interact with students and speak on their own personal application process, and overall college experience. Our goal with this workshop and panel is to provide students with a realistic picture of challenges they may face during their college application process, as well as give them tools and suggestions on how to prepare and overcome these obstacles.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be a current undergraduate student (or) have already completed your Bachelor's degree

  • Must be able to attend the full workshop, in person, at Mendota High School on Saturday September 24, 2022.

Stipend:

Prep Scholars will receive a one-time nominal stipend of $500 to compensate for mileage, time commitment, and loss of wages that may be experienced for attending this event. Breakfast and lunch will also be provided.
